Brazil - FIFA World Cup 2014 - Day 2

Netherlands (5) - Spain (1)

The supposed shocker of the day was Oranje's 5-1 defeat of reigning champs Spain (La Roja) in a rematch of 2010's WC final. Spain needs to tighten up its back line, and Casillas must regain his form,  confidence, and first touch (!) to avoid an ignominious early exit.

But was it really a shock? After several years of appearing unbeatable, Spain has been struggling. One need only look at their losses in the 2012 London Olympics to Japan and Honduras to see that Spain no longer has the psychological edge on their opponents.

The Flying Dutchmen, on the other hand, appeared in top form, finishing the easy (and difficult) opportunities that eluded them in the 2010. Moving forward the Netherlands will be on the odds-on favorite to top Group B.

Mexico (1) - Cameroon (0)

In a game characterized by questionable calls and frequent flopping, Mexico eventually prevailed in the pouring rain. Although in poor form leading up to the tournament, Mexico seems to be peaking at the right time and seems poised to take the second seed in a group likely to be topped by Brazil.

For the record, Dos Santos was not off-side on the corner kick. A player cannot be off-side if he receives the ball directly from a corner kick. Furthermore, a player cannot be off-side just because the ball is deflected by an opponent. See confusing but ultimately accurate discussion here. The only possible explanation is that the AR thought that a Mexican teammate had deflected the ball. Even then, a defender's foot was behind Dos Santos, effectively keeping him on sides.

Chile (3) - Australia (1)

Chile looked good early, scoring two  goals in the first 20 minutes, threatening to rout the Socceroos. But Australia showed speed and tenacity on the counter attack and got back into the game, trailing 1-2 at halftime.

But in the end, Chile's superior technical skill and overwhelming edge in possession was too much to overcome and they closed it out, adding the insurance goal in stoppage time. With the Spanish loss, Chile looks poised to secure at least second place in their group.
