Brazil - FIFA World Cup 2014 - Day 9

Costa Rica (1) - Italy (0) - Group D

Ole. Ole, Ole, Ole. Ticos. Ticos.

Having seen this one in person, I am no longer a WC virgin!

The ref called almost no fouls. Interestingly, the players responded not by becoming chippy with their opponents but by forgetting how to dive.

The Ticos seized control of Group D with a nice victory over flagging Italy. Super Mario had his chances, but when his chip over the CR GK went wide, he had squandered perhaps the best chance of the game for Italy.  Costa Rica, by my math, has already won group D and will likely face Ivory Coast in a game I will also be at! Can the Italians regroup against Uruguay to earn the D2 seed?

France (5) - Switzerland (2) - Group E

The highlights made it look like the most entertaining match of the tourney. A score that even the most jaded American can appreciate but lacking any drama. Hopes for Americans to understand soccer recede with games that feature scoring but lack tension.

Ecuador (2)  - Honduras (1) - Group E

With a solid if unspectacular win against Los Catrachos, the Amarillos proved you shouldn't mess with any team named after a city in Texas. Ecuador is now poised to take the E2 seed. If they can reach R16, they will likely run smack dab into Messi and his Albiceleste.
